THE INSTRUMENT in Amsterdam !

by Macauley on June 20th, 2007

press photoRotterdam didn’t want us. Cannes missed out. A three picture deal at Warner Bros. has, well, yet to materialize.

But that doesn’t stop us from spreading the word ourselves. Thursday night, to celebrate the Summer Solstice (not really, but it sounds appropriate), The Instrument takes to the screen in Amsterdam! One of the few events where the reality exceeds the (lack of) hype!

Here’s a special sneak peak at the commentary track of our upcoming eventual DVD (4 minutes):

Acclaim for THE INSTRUMENT…

“Slyly ambitious….’The Instrument,’ though, surprises most for eschewing any genre tack whatsoever….The students concoct a series of music-based rites that become increasingly compelling to watch.”
-Robert Koehler, VARIETY

“Finally, and damn near unclassifiably, comes Adam Nemett’s THE INSTRUMENT, an engaging shaggy-dog story….The music, costumes, art direction and personalities-in-formation that contribute to this lively exercise in art and/or gestalt therapy provide a potent draft of vicarious pleasure.” -Ron Stringer, LA WEEKLY

“THE INSTRUMENT is a wonderfully imaginative film with visionary overtones.” -Joyce Carol Oates, Author

‚ÄúThis is a film to watch out for‚Ķextremely artistic, quirky and fascinating. The ensemble was very well cast and engaging….Daringly explores metaphysical themes through the construct of a game which includes music, ritual, emotional interactions, and artistic expression. Best were the natural and refreshing moments of humor. This is a unique film from a filmmaker we all need to watch.‚Äù -Muriel Stockdale, Director of the Institute for Spiritual Entertainment

Chess Life – The New Superstars

by Macauley on June 12th, 2007

Chess Life - June IssueChess Life - June Issue
The June Issue of Chess Life Magazine features a cover story by yours truly. For the first time, in addition to being mailed to all USCF members, the issue is featured in a special display at select Barnes & Noble stores around the country. Here’s a list (in a new window). Pick one up!

And the first paragraph of the story:

For three decades, the World Champion has hailed from Russia with a name beginning in “K.” But, as with all sports, time waits for no chess player. Karpov, at 56 years old, is well past his prime, and as of April is off the FIDE rating list due to inactivity. Kasparov, a vigorous 44, has nevertheless traded chess for politics. And Kramnik, who turns 32 this month, while unmatched at match play, will soon be confronted with a double-round robin World Championship tournament where his typical finish of second, third or fourth, will not make the grade. Gradeschool is the new place to look for future World Champion material. While all three “Ks” were in their late teens before becoming grandmasters, nowadays elite players are earning the game’s top title as early as 12.

Kakistocracy – from Wiktionary

by Macauley on June 9th, 2007

Wikipedia logoKakistocracy (ironically paraphrased) – Rule by the least-able or least-principled of citizens, is a form of government in which the people least qualified to control the government are the people who control the government.

You do the math…
