“Man in a Suitcase”
That sounds about right. The non-stop travel schedule since New Year’s Eve included, last week, flights on five out of six consecutive days. I like flying, but that was a bit much. The 8-hour time zone shift between U.S. Central time, and Eastern European time is no fun either.
Internet Chess Club newsletter, February 21, 2009:
Our man always at the ready at the departure gate with his passport and video camera at hand, Macauley Peterson, leaves no continent untouched in our quest here at ICC Chess.FM to bring you the brightest and best video coverage and interviews from all the world’s major chess events and personalities.
He started the year off in Norway at the Aker Chess Challenge before heading to Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands for Corus. From there, he caught a plane to London and onto Gibraltar, and then back to the US for a little technical advice to those good folks at the St. Louis Chess Club, who will be staging the US Championship (watch this space for future developments!) there, running May 7th-17th. The next day, he was heading to the airport again for the first available flight to Sofia, Bulgaria, for the eagerly-awaited Kamsky-Topalov World Chess Challenge. And from there? Yes, you guessed it. Our intrepid globetrotter will be jetting off to Spain to squeeze in the final rounds of Linares for us.
You can follow all his travels in the ICC Chess.FM blog. Checkout now the latest additions to the blog, including an exclusive 25 min audio interview with Magnus Carlsen and video coverage of Gibraltar, scene of yet another victory for Chess.FM favorite and five-time Russian champion Peter Svidler.
My appearance on WCN
Before heading to Holland, I swung through Stockholm to appear on World Chess News, an internet/TV show that has been around since 2004. The crew of five siblings, Adriana, Antonia, Amelia, Alfred and Albert, are responsible for every aspect of the show, and have managed to put together a high caliber presentation on a shoestring budget.
In addition to the clips below, I also interviewed the WCN team for a clip on the Chess.FM blog.
My segment on The World
Produced by Public Radio International, co-produced with BBC World Service and WGBH Radio Boston.
Predictably, they cut it down to the bland sound bites, ignoring the discussion of why it’s significant that Anand win a match to truly become the undisputed World Champion. OK, it’s a short segment, but that’s the real news.
The obligatory “chess was invented in India?” section was a drag. It would be nice to get past that. I mean, we don’t find a story about the World Series dwelling on the fact that Baseball was invented in in the U.S.A.
If you have just 3 minutes to talk about Lennox Lewis fighting Mike Tyson, you don’t spend half of it asking about who invented the boxing glove!
And worst of all, they cut my tennis analogy completely!
Still, this went out to 2 million listeners on around 200 public radio stations in 41 states this afternoon…not too bad.

8 Minutes with Gata
GM Gata Kamsky was at the top of a six-way tie for first at the National Open (June 5-8), part of the Las Vegas International Chess Festival. In this 8 minute interview with Chess.FM, recorded immediately after his Round Six draw against GM-elect Josh Friedel Kamsky discusses his time in Vegas and his thoughts on the upcoming World Championship candidates match with Veselin Topalov, scheduled for November in Lvov, Ukraine.
ICC video in World Chess News
My video on the European Championships was incorporated into the World Chess News show (Episode 198) as part of their segment on the tournament beginning at 9:08 into the show:
World Chess News is a long-running, and nicely produced 28-minute chess news show. The show is in Swedish with English subtitles.
Back in January I had a little misunderstanding with the Krzymowski family team producing the WCN, after they embedded a severely edited version of my “Fischer Remembered” video without permission into an episode. However, we’ve had a pleasant correspondence about it subsequently, and now I’m quite happy to be able to help them out on the content side from time to time.
It’s a classy, high quality show, and they seem like good people with a healthy passion for chess. I know long it takes to produce a show like that and Adriana, Antonia, Amelia, Alfred and Albert should be commended for their consistent efforts.
Chess Talk with John Watson
I was John Watson’s guest on his ICC Chess.FM show Chess Talk earlier this month. Normally this show is restricted to ICC members only, however we decided to make this one available to all.
I give behind the scenes insights into Chess.FM’s tournament coverage over the past year and discuss my video work, hanging out with the world’s top players, chess journalism and more.
FYI…The ChessVibes comments in the discussion of journalism was from the April 23rd post.
